Family | Volutidae |
Name | Alcithoe flemingi , Dell, R.K., 1978 |
Size | 89 mm |
Locality | see map |
Note | Trawled at 1400 ft depth between the Auckland and Campbell Islands, August 1992. Top whorl of protoconch broken as is the case with nearly all examples of this species - must be some sort of coming-of-age ritual with these guys - I wonder whether it's just the males... ;>) Lip is fine and mature, interior gloss very nice. Check out the circular marks - sort of depressions - on the dorsal near the lip - 2 small ones and a larger one. A. benthicola, its most closely related species, has such circular marks where egg capsules had been attached and carried about - I wonder whether this could be the case also of A. flemingi? €3 shipping possible - see options |
