Conus crosseanus f. suffusus - GIANT , G. B. Sowerby III, 1870
Size
66.6 mm
Locality
New Caledonia
Note
A MARVEL FROM THE MARMOREUS GROUP.
In New Caledonia we find representatives of the marmoreus group that are special: They are much smaller than the typical marmoreus from more northern regions and Australia. The colour ranges from almost completely black to white - sometimes with a pink shimmer as in this specimen. Occasionally the marmoreus pattern is present, often with small white tents, sometimes the white shells have sparse black spots.
The quality is F++ because of the stress lines that can be seen in the photo. These lines are not detrimental to this shell as they connect with the pendants and reveal the pink-orange colouring underneath. The shell is virtually identical to the Tucker & Tenorio piece of 54 mm, but it is much larger: a GIANT, not far from WRS size. Suffusus has been practically non-existent for decades: most of the shells date from the 1980s.
