Note | A HARPA MAJOR THAT LOOKS LIKE A KAJIYAMAI
The harpa major is one of those fantastic, successful species that have conquered an area that covers a large part of the globe. At one end of its range, the species lives on the coasts of East Africa. At the other end we find them in Hawaii! From Japan in the north to Australia in the south. The area is incredibly large. This cute Harpa major has the distinct pattern of the H. kajiyamai, but not only that, it is also visibly full-grown and has the size of a very large kajiyamai: 62 mm.
Look at the stunning colouration, with two dark lines crossing the variegation, one on the shoulder, one on the lower part of the body whorl. The opening reveals that it is major rather than kajiyamai. The latter has a strong brown spot on the lower columellar side and a very faint one on the upper side, while major has two strong black spots, as seen here. A curiosity.
Philippines. Bohol. Inabangan. 10-25 m. 2016.
