Item | # 0003292641 | Family | Harpidae | Name | Harpa harpa - SPECIAL COLOR , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 51.5 mm |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | A TREMENDOUSLY BEAUTIFUL AND UNUSUAL HARPA HARPA
This beautiful harpa, which almost always has a very firm shell, occurs in a variety of colours. In the Philippines, the shells are usually either grey-cream with red spots, like this one, or reddish, sometimes very red, like the pieces dipped at Olango. But there are all intermediate colours.
The colour of the present shell is splendid and unusual. This is the only known specimen in which the red colour is practically absent. You have to look twice to recognise that it is a "Harpa harpa". The identity is revealed by the ribs, which have the typical pattern of black horizontal lines in groups of two or three.
Fantastic piece, the best of the best. Connoisseurs and harpa collectors can only dream of a shell like this. Much rarer than any H. costata.
Philippines. Bohol. Calape. 10-25 m.
