Item | # 0003294975 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea tigris pardalis - ?? FAKE ?? , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 75.5 mm |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | F+++. Exceptionel. Fakes are always fascinating. It's not certain if this is a fake, and the supplier has kept his mouth shut. So it's uncertain, but this shell just looks too good to be true, and it's possible we're looking at one of the better fakes ever made. 70% of the back is golden yellow with dark brown, almost black spots. Such a colour occurs in nature. Then, on the left side, the shell turns black with a very nice dorsal line. This may have been created by heating the piece, starting from a very dark Tigris. A mystery, very fascinating. Beautiful on top. For "chicka" conversations with your fellow collectors.
Philippines. Olango Island. 2013.
