Zoila friendii - Kostini Hybrid , (J. E. Gray, 1831)
Size
70.8 mm
Locality
Margaret River, WA
Note
In the area west of Margaret River in depths of 120 to 130 metres of water we find huge variation in the friendii population with shells that vary from being very kostini like to those that are very similar to inshore friendii. They have huge diversity in both colour and shape.
This specimen was taken from a geodia sponge in 129 metres of water west of Margaret River in Western Australia in January 2024.
It has the shape of an inshore friendii being more slender and with more prominent siphons that a kostini taken from deeper water.
It has a dorsum very similar to a south coast candida, a cream base and gold lateral spotting and siphon trim.
The shell has perfect siphons but has a noticeable dorsal growth interruption. Even so it is a very different and special shell. Fine+
