Item | # 0003306776 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Very Large , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 113 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. It is currently difficult to obtain specimens over 100 mm like this one. This specimen is in very good condition for the species, with a nice lip and a single relatively shallow chip, and a dorsum covered with calcareous algae over some tiny barnacles that can be cleaned further, and with a few boreholes of an unidentified vermetid (Dendropoma?), but with no Scurria scars or other damage (as can be seen in the images). A good low price for a very nice and very large specimen of Fissurella. |
