Item | # 0003308337 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella maxima - Cleaned, Nice , G. B. Sowerby I, 1834 |
Size | 66.9 to 65.4 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | A lot of four very nice, although small, specimens of Fissurella maxima, the largest species of Fissurella. This species lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and very often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. The specimens in this lot are in excellent condition for the species, with nice thick shells with very nice border of the shells with no chips, and a dorsum cleaned of any epibionts, except tiny remnants of algae, which can be cleaned further with patience. This lot shows the different color patterns for Fissurella maxima, from pale specimens to nice dark rays over a paler backgroud. A good price for a lot of very nice cleaned specimens of Fissurella. |
