Item | # 0003340485 | Family | Buccinidae | Name | Neptunea lyrata - JAPAN FORM , Gmelin, 1791 |
Size | 141.5 mm |
Locality | Japan |
Note | ASSOCIATED WITH THE ICE-AGE NORTH AMERICAN PACIFIC, BUT HERE FROM JAPAN. This Neptunea is the same type of aesthetics associated with coldwater wizards, but in gigantic size: a 141 mm. Neptunea lyrata in excellent condition for the species. The protoconch is, as always, no longer present, and there are minor flaws, but all in all this is the best of hundreds. The clam was trawled in the Sea of Japan by fishermen from the Dalian region of China. The colour is brown in shades, slightly lighter on the ribs. The perfect columellar callus and the opening are very white and stand out from the rest of the shell. This species lives in the northern Pacific, on both sides: the American shells are generally smaller than these, and much more common in collections. Fraussen & Terryn call this the "Japan form". This is one of the best pieces ever.
Japan Sea. North of Japan Sea. In gravel and sand. 2012.
