Item | # 0003340487 | Family | Buccinidae | Name | Neptunea despecta despecta - ALBINO , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 119.1 mm |
Locality | Iceland |
Note | AN ELEGANTLY SHAPED ALBINO NEPTUNEA. The sister species of the "antiqua" in European collections and a nightmare when it comes to quality. Here a well above average despecta of a pleasing 119 mm. The shell is in excellent condition, and as far as beauty is concerned, it certainly belongs to the 1 % of the most beautiful Despecta ever fished. The photos say it all. The Despecta was a classic in the days of "Island" fishing by Belgian boats and Diana Pierre sold loads of them. That time is now almost half a century gone and the material has become scarce. We are dealing here with a beautiful "Kidneys Bank" scallop brought back by Belgian fishermen, similar to the one from Fraussen & Terryn, Fig. 3b, also from South Iceland. Fantastically beautiful quality for this species. Much better than average, and few collections can boast such beauty.
Iceland. South Iceland. Kidneys Bank. 63°N 14°W.L. Trawled by Belgian fisherman. Ex. collection G.T. Poppe.
