Item | # 0003341233 | Family | Cardiidae | Name | Corculum cardissa f. dionaeum , Broderip & G. B. Sowerby I, 1828 |
Size | 13.7 mm |
Locality | French Polynesia |
Note | A SHAPE OF UNIVERSAL APPEAL: TRUE DIONAEUM. We use the name of "dionaeum" as a form name of cardissa. But some authors consider this a valid species. If you look at the present treasure, you can understand why. When we consult Hylleberg (2004, part 1) we see on page 106 a fine reproduction from the Conchological Illustrations of Sowerby from 1833. Later we see the shell in Reeve (1843) but he shows a single valve. And likely also single valves in Abbott and Dance (1982). Salvat and Rives show two pieces. All shells are said to come from the "Central Pacific Islands, the Pacific, Reao or Tahiti". All shells are small: between 12 and 20 mm. The present piece also fits close to the Sowerby shells, but without the red band. The texture of the shell is similar to the one seen in lorenzi, but then again different, and the spines are much more developed compared to typical cardissa. Very hard to get from Polynesia, apparently "the real thing". Superb and special, and exciting conchological piece. True dionaeum are extremely rare.
French Polynesia. Huahine. Small islet off Tefarerii. In small sand sockets in bottom crevices in shallow water.
