Zoila jeaniana aurata - Jeaniana Hydrid , L. Raybaudi, 1979
Size
56.1 mm
Locality
Bernier Island, WA
Note
In the area west of Bernier Island jeaniana fall into three distinct populations. In 60 to 85 metres of water immediately west of Bernier Island jeaniana are very large with dark dorsa, high cream margins and ink black bases similar to praeclara in color but with a jeaniana shape. In offshore waters in depths between 140 and 210 metres of water we find large typical aurata which don't show a lot of variation.
Between these two populations in depths of 95 to 120 metres we find a population of dwarf jeaniana which show huge variation in size and colour. We have collected shells which have varied from 31 to 79mm in length and vary from shells I classify as aurata to jeaniana to gold jeaniana and the odd aureabasis. I believe this is a hybrid population with two populations of friendii having been isolated from each other by lower sea levels during a past glacial period then re-merged during the current inter-glacial period.
This shell has the shape and base of an aurata but the dorsal colour and lateral spotting of a jeaniana. It was collected from a geodia sponge in 110 metres of water west of Bernier Island off Shark Bay in May 2024. The shell with tan dorsal pattern, cream base and margins and gold siphon trim. It has perfect siphons but has a growth fold on it's columnar dorsum. Exceptional Pretty Dwarf !!! Fine+++.
