Item | # 0003377409 | Family | Cassidae | Name | Casmaria turgida - SPECIAL COLOR , Reeve, 1848 |
Size | 65.2 mm |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | A HIGHLY UNUSUAL CASMARIA. Turgida has been reported from Indonesia, China, the Philippines and Vietnam. Tryon (1885) also reported shells from Mauritius, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc... but he probably confused the species with other CASSIDAE. We are only dealing with a species whose limits do not extend beyond the very central Indo-Pacific region between China, Vietnam, Indonesia and with a center in the Philippines. At first glance, we find only 14 illustrations in the classical literature treating the species as “C. ponderosa f. turgida”, a trauma from Abbott's treatment of Indo-Pacific molluscs. This shell is darker than normal and has three bands shining through the uniformly warm brown and orange body vertebrae. A piece for connoisseurs and lovers of aesthetic beauty.
Philippines. Zamboanga Peninsula. 10-25 m. 2017.
