Item | # 0003382150 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Umbilia hesitata - RARE LOCALITY; BIG , Iredale, 1916 |
Size | 100.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | A standout hesitata from the JES Collection, from a rare locality. Very little collecting was undertaken from this locality, half a century ago, but the few hesitata collected were striking, and quite distinct from typical examples trawled much farther North in great numbers. The current specimen was the BEST I ever obtained of this particular southern form. Spectacular dorsal pattern of expansive, mottled clouds of rich golden straw. Markedly elongate. Hypermature, with great weight to size ratio. Definitely for the Umbilia connoisseur. Data: Off Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia; upon sand/mud substrate; 50-60 m; dredged; 1970s. Size: 100.3 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
