Item | # 0003384819 |
Family | Pectinidae |
Name | Pedum spondyloideum - GIANT , Gmelin, 1791 |
Size | 97.2 mm |
Locality | Philippines |
Note | ONE OF THE LARGEST PEDUM SPECIES IN THE WORLD. The pedum is one of the most amazing shells in the world: the shells live completely embedded in coral heads. Only the exterior is visible, the shell literally "grows" with the coral to stay on the surface and not get buried in the cruel coral head. I wonder if the lines left on this gigantic piece are not growth rings. Diving a perfect pedum is a challenge: you have to dive with a scalpel and a pair of pliers. With the scalpel you cut through the muscle in a second: you can't be fast enough with a normal knife, then you take the mussel out with the pliers. A plastic bag for each mussel. They are so fragile that they break at the slightest touch. A top item in any shell collection due to their size.
Philippines. Mindanao. Zamboanga area. 5-10 m deep in coral. 2016.
