Item | # 0003386425 | Family | Pectinidae | Name | Nodipecten nodosus , Linnaeus, 1758 |
Size | 132 mm |
Locality | Honduras |
Note | GEMSTONE MASSIVE RARE HONDURAS GNARLED BEAUTY. The Nodipecten were separated millions of years ago with the formation of Panama and thus had plenty of time to evolve into a fully separated new species, after all it only took 4 million years for humans to evolve from rather humble beginnings into the species proper...! What I am saying is that the population of Nodipecten nodosus from Honduras (i.e. from the Caribbean side) has amazingly retained features of today's Subnodosus (i.e. the taxon from the Pacific Ocean), and these features include massive and rather thick valves and typical red nacre with only one bank of orange nacre towards the margin. This leads me to believe that the actual taxonomic status of this rare and interesting population needs further investigation and that this should possibly lead to a revision of the taxon with a new species. If I am right, then shells like this one from my collection with excellent locality data from old memory will prove to be extremely interesting and valuable to the scientific collector. Moreover, this is a GEM specimen of magnificent size and rare, exceptional beauty.
Honduras, Off Punta Patuca. In 35 m depth, live taken specimen shell.
