Size | 116 mm |
Locality | Brazil |
Note | GEMSTONE AMAZING DEEP RED RARE GNARLED BEAUTY. I chose this shell specifically to add to the selection of Nodipecten, and interestingly this piece is from Brazil: if it were from a more northern provenance, I would not hesitate to call it fragosus due to its very light structure, inflated knobs and number of prominent ribs. However, the subgenus Nodipecten offers more than just a taxonomic challenge, and I find it difficult to even name these lesser-known Brazilian beauties, which are quite different from their more famous Florida cousins collected in the good old days. My specimen is a gem of incredible quality and in excellent condition. A fabulous piece.
Brazil. Arraial do Cabo, Cabo Frio, By diver on rubble bottom in 35 m depth, live taken specimen shell.
