Item | # 0003430064 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella latimarginata - Nice , G. B. Sowerby I, 1835 |
Size | 73.7 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One nice and selected specimen of Fissurella latimarginata. This species, as most congeners, lives on rocks, usually near and under forests of the giant algae Lessonia. Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. They also have the dorsum of the shell always covered by calcareous algae, vermetids, boring polychaetes and other epibionts, particularly Scurria species. Fissurella latimarginata in particular is always found with chips either naturally or when collected, as their margins at their borders are very thin and sharp. This specimen is in excellent condition for the species, as it has minuscule nicks in the border of the lip, and it shows a natural uncleaned dorsum with reddish algae, as can be seen in the images. After cleaning the dorsum will reveal its burgundy color. A low initial price for a very nice specimen |
