| Note | F+++. TWO COLORFUL JUVENILES OF THE PHILIPPINE SALMIANUS. These two young specimens, caught together in 250 m deep waters near Balut Island, are exceptionally bright red and will be an eye-catcher in any group of pleurotomariids. They look like gotoi, and indeed the fisherman thought they were gotoi. But compared to real gotoi: the sculpture is different, the sides are straighter and the colors are not the same. The Philippine material is usually much finer than the northern shells from China, Taiwan or Japan, which are usually very heavy and massacred by presumably predatory crabs. The Balut salmianus from the Philippines are much rarer than their northern relatives.
