Item | # 0003460787 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila jeaniana sherylae - Exquisite dark gem !!! , L. Raybaudi, 1990 |
Size | 71.1 mm |
Locality | Quobba, WA |
Note | Dive collected by Andrew Edinger from Spirastrella sponge in 36 metres of water off Point Quobba, Shark Bay during April 2021. A gemmy shell with a distinct blue band across the dorsum, separating the dark brown blotched pattern.
Sherylae were collected in large numbers during the 1990'ties resulting in a significant price drop. In 2011 there was a severe water temperature event resulting in the decimation of the population and it wasn't until 2018 that divers started finding the odd specimen. Even today they are collected in very limited numbers. Cypraea rosselli satiata has not reappeared and may be extinct.
Recently collected shells seem different to the original population and appear to be larger, darker and more attractive. They should command a significantly higher price than old faded specimens that were collected in the 1990'ties surfacing from old collections.
This is a very exceptional specimen extracted from our personal collection.
A true gem! |
