Item | # 0003472168 | Family | Fissurellidae | Name | Fissurella bridgesii - Very Nice, Large , Reeve, 1849 |
Size | 91.3 mm |
Locality | Caldera, northern Chile |
Note | One very nice specimen of the very rare Fissurella bridgesi, one of the large species of Fissurella endemic to the southeastern Pacific. This species lives in the subtidal in very specific places, and it is found in very low numbers. This is one of the rarest Fissurella species found in Chile and PerĂș (together with Fissurella pulchra). Large Fissurella species are edible (and very tasty), and so are caught by fishermen, collected with hooks and often damaged. This particular specimen has a nice thick and heavy shell, with a nice natural dorsum with calcareous and red algae which can be cleaned further, and a bit of minute boreholes by local burrowing barnacles. It has an almost perfect border with no damages except some very tiny shallow nicks (as can be seen in the images). The border is also interesting as it has a nice degradĂ© of colors from its anterior side to its posterior side. As large Fissurella are commercially exploited in the area they are nowadays more uncommon, and this particular large species is very rare. This is an opportunity to obtain a rare and difficult-to-get species for a low price. |
