Item | # 0003473822 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Zoila venusta - Bernier Island Fossil !! , (G. B. Sowerby I, 1847) |
Size | 69.2 mm |
Locality | Bernier Island, WA |
Note | In 170 metres of water west of Bernier Island off Shark Bay we find a occasional fossil venusta. They are found in fossil debris around holes fish have dug into the bottom between and under rock slabs. It appears that venusta were present in some number on the Hartog Shelf in the past, perhaps during the last ice age. We have found several specimens over the years and had assumed that they were extinct but in May 2023 we found a live specimen in 130 metres of water west of False Entrance and shot my theory down in flames. This is the only live specimen we have found on the Hartog Shelf. The offered shell could be considered a very cold case as the octopus drill hole in it's dorsum is a big clue to the long deceased culprit. Collected from 172 metres of water west of Bernier Island in May 2020. |
