Item | # 0003489630 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Lyria lyraeformis - BEST OF THE BEST GIANT , Swainson, W.J., 1823 |
Size | 129.2 mm |
Locality | Somalia |
Note | At virtually 130 mm, this absolutely EXCEPTIONAL specimen is not only the LARGEST, FINEST, and LAST of the JES Collection, but the BEST specimen I have ever encountered. Apart from its impressive size and exceptional quality, the factors contributing to its singular nature are: 1) the whorls are perfectly aligned about the central axis, with none of the oft seen tilting to one side in the upper spire; 2) the axial ribs are equidistant, and carry a superb, well-formed pattern; and 3) most significantly of all, it exhibits truly exquisite colour: deep, luminous apricot-orange, especially evident upon the body whorl. Completely natural outer apertural lip, with no artificial smoothing – very important for the connoisseur. Perfect pin-point initial protoconch whorl. A ‘museum piece’ for the connoisseur of truly exquisite seashells. Data: Off Merca, Lower Shabelle Province, Somalia; upon sand substrate; 20-40 m; dredged; 1998. Size: 129.2 mm. Grading: Fine++++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
