Note | GEM. LESS THAN A DOZEN SEEN. We here deal with a cowry that is amongst the rarest shells, by my knowledge, never been figured as such in the literature. It concerns a Purpuradusta hammondae of huge size: with 17.8 mm in length, the second biggest hammondae I ever seen, out of thousands. According to the experts Lorenz & Hubert this species falls apart in 3 subspecies: the hammondae senus stricto lives at the tip of Papua New Guinea south to Queensland. The hammondae dampierensis is a species from the northwest of the Australian continent and the southwest of Papua New Guinea. The range of the hammondae raysummersi is along the southeast Asian coasts: from southern China down to Sulawesi and west to Java, Malaysia and Vietnam. Three features combined distinguish these shells: their globose or pyriform shape, the huge size and the discrete small speckling with prominent bands. The latter coloration is typical for the Southeast Asian “raysummersi.”
Philippines. Bohol. Talibon. 15-20 m. October 2014.
