F++. A REFINED SNOWY WHITE PERGRANDIS WITH A MAJOR PATTERN. The Conus pegrandis was once one of the great rarities in Conus, much sought after. It became famous when figured in "Rare Shells of Taiwan" by T.C. Lan, and in the early 1990 years collectors could acquire pieces from Taiwanese fishermen on a regular base, but at that time for very considerable money only: always several thousands of dollar. But these were even never to be called "fine-". They were merely ugly ducks, as this species lives in muddy areas together with giant crabs. So, growth lines and broken lips are the rule in the pergrandis. As usual, the Philippine shells are considerably better than the Taiwanese when it comes to Conus. Think about darkini and stupella. And this is also true for pergrandis. The only and single place on this planet where pergrandis is to be called uncommon and not rare is Aliguay Island. There, at between 150 and 200 m, the species has been regularly fished. While once there were 150 boats trawling shells in Aliguay, this is now reduced to one boat, and since the Covid, no supply anylonger. From a vintage stock of excellent quality, we found this rather very beautiful pergrandis. Fantastic pattern of dark brown on pure white. The main color band shows bizarre shapes as wild animals and deer. Amazing to look at. Philippines. Aliguay Island. Offshore northeast of Mindanao. Collected between 50-150 m. 2010. #560157
