| Note | China, Hainan, Qionghai, dived at 5-10m. This set of four Mauritia arabica asiatica was told by the diver who collected them to have been sourced from the same locality. However, I believe he might be partially keeping the exact location a secret from me. Based on our understanding of cowries, the green and gray shells usually derive their color from algae enveloped in their glaze, while the red and orange ones often get their hues from living in iron-rich environments like shipwrecks. Regardless, this collection of specimens, close in size and varied in color, was offered to me at a high price after the diver’s long search and accumulation. The condition, like most overglazed specimens, only merits a rating of F++~F+++, but they excel in their exquisite and varied colors. |
