Item | # 0003874496 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Volutoconus bednalli - RARE THURSDAY IS. FORM , Brazier, J.W., 1878 |
Size | 96.3 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An OUTSTANDING specimen of the rare, in-shore, THURSDAY ISLAND form. Exceptional quality for the form – virtual perfection. Hypermature, with extreme weight and solidity, and thickened, ‘rolled’, glossed apertural lip. Rich colour, in conjunction with a pattern of the highest aesthetic merit, formed with extremely rare regularity. Two distinct forms of the species occur: a larger, elongate, off-shore form; and a smaller, broader, in-shore form. The former inhabits deep waters in the Timor and Arafura Seas, and was discovered in the 1970s, during Taiwanese trawling operations off the northern Australian coast. The latter has been known since the shell’s description, and is found in shallower water. The specimen was collected by local pearl divers, who were active off remote Thursday Island in the 1970s. Specimens of this rare form are now obtainable only from choice old collections. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist whose collection yet lacks this important form. Data: Off Port Kennedy, Thursday Island, Torres Strait Islands, Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia; upon sand substrate; 10-20 m; dived; 1974. Size: 96.3 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
