| Note | When one looks closely at this EXCEPTIONAL, ultra-large specimen of this ‘classic’ RARE species, all manner of colours become apparent – blackish blue; olive green; apricot; orange; lemon; white; ivory; caramel – all enhanced by well-developed, exceptionally well-preserved spiral sculpture. Just a few such spectacular examples were found during the mid 1980s off the Tapul Group, in the southern Philippines. I secured this outstanding specimen soon after its discovery in 1986, and it has remained a favourite mitre in the JES Collection. I am not aware of any comparable specimens having been found, nor offered, in recent decades. Definitely for the Costellariidae specialist, or dedicated admirer of truly exquisite seashells. Data: Off Siasi, Tapul Group, Sulu Archipelago, Sulu, Philippines; upon coral sand/rubble substrate, amongst reef; 4 m; dived; 1982. Size: 65.2 mm. Grading: Gem.
