Item | # 0003876291 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Cypraea globulus sphaeridium - RARE KWAJALEIN JEWEL , Schilder & Schilder, 1938 |
Size | 16.2 mm |
Locality | Marshall Islands |
Note | Although RARE at Kwajalein, the Marshall Islands form of sphaeridium is the most beautiful incarnation of the subspecies – a truly exquisite jewel. Their markedly attentuated terminals, even of length, lend Kwajalein specimens an elegance surpassing that of examples from any other locality. Another element enhancing the aesthetic appeal of Kwajalein specimens, is their thick, resplendent gloss, unusual for a small cowrie. Ultra-rich colour, with dark chocolate accents flanking terminals. Spectacular ventrum. Rare quality – PERFECTION. The ONLY Kwajalein specimen of the JES Collection. The specimen was formerly in the famous US collection of Edward T. Schelling, and the original Schelling label accompanies the specimen. A sphaeridium for the connoisseur. Data: Off Kwajalein, Kwajalein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands; upon reef substrate, under coral (Porites lobata Dana, 1846) ledge, in lagoon, at night; 1-2 m; dived; 1994. Size: 16.2 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: 1) Edward T. Schelling, Shalimar; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
