Item | # 0003876326 | Family | Cypraeidae | Name | Umbilia hesitata - RARE WHITE / LEMON FORM , Iredale, 1931 |
Size | 92.7 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | An outstanding large specimen of this very RARE form, from the ‘old days’ of southern Victorian deep-water trawling. The ONLY specimen of this form from the JES Collection. The nebulous lemon marginal maculae, and similar colour around the terminals, separate this form from classic, pure white U. h. howelli, with this form being far rarer. Very RARE LOCALITY, whence there has been no collecting for decades, and no fresh specimens will be available in future. Rare quality for this form, as the majority of specimens from this locality are substantially affected by their detritus-laden substrate. Dentition devoid of typical mud inclusions – a very pure shell. Undoubtedly lacking in many of even the most advanced cowrie collections, and definitely for the Umbilia specialist. Data: Off Gabo Island, towards Cape Howe, Victoria, Australia; upon mud/sand/detritus substrate; 140-180 m; trawled; 1981. Size: 92.7 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
