Item | # 0003876346 | Family | Volutidae | Name | Amoria damoni keatsiana - TAIWANESE 1970s GIANT , Ludbrook, 1953 |
Size | 108.2 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | For the advanced Volutidae specialist seeking to understand the full expression of this beautiful, deep-water subspecies, forget all the small, sub-adult examples usually encountered – THIS is the kind of specimen one requires – the HUGE, ‘classic’ Taiwanese-trawled form, only collected during the 1970s. The hindrance for the connoisseur, however, is that such examples are prone to substantial damage during life, and do not readily form a regular pattern, with the further detraction of typically suffering damage during the trawling process. The current specimen is a rare exception. Very few ‘old boat’ specimens are of this size, quality, and beauty. With the thickness of the shell walls increasing in proportion to size, such deep-water giants exhibit a far greater weight than one encounters in smaller, typical examples, being remarkably solid and heavy in the hand. Their external gloss is also enhanced, resulting in a porcellaneous appearance. Data: Off northern Australia, Australia; upon sand substrate; 100-300 m; trawled; 1970s. Size: 108.2 mm. Grading: Fine++++. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
