Item | # 0003877297 | Family | Harpidae | Name | Harpa crenata - HISTORICAL SP.; SUPERB , (Swainson, W., 1822) |
Size | 59.4 mm |
Locality | Mexico |
Note | An outstanding large specimen, of exceptional quality, exhibiting beautiful colour and pattern. The specimen was formerly in the famous US collection of Walter Jacob Eyerdam (1892-1974) of Seattle, and the original 1960s Eyerdam label accompanies the specimen. The Eyerdam collection was bequeathed to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, (where, by coincidence, a portion of the immense JES Collection also reposes), and very few Eyerdam shells were ever made available to the wider collecting public, those few which were having been deaccessioned during his life for the purpose of exchange. The specimen is also of historical significance upon account of having been obtained via early commercial trawling activity in Mexico, at a time when the species was very rare. Impeccably maintained since entering the JES Collection, the specimen appears as fresh as if collected this year. Data: Off Mazatlán, Estado Libre y Soberano de Sinaloa, Mexico; upon sand/rubble substrate; 40-60 m; trawled; 1959. Size: 59.4 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: 1) Walter Jacob Eyerdam, Seattle; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
