Item | # 0003877360 | Family | Muricidae | Name | Thais textilosa - NEW WORLD RECORD SIZE , Lamarck, 1822 |
Size | 116.1 mm |
Locality | Australia |
Note | At the absolutely ASTONISHING, and almost UNBELIEVABLE size of 116.1 MM, this incredible old age GIANT, collected almost half a century ago, establishes a NEW WORLD RECORD SIZE for the species by an enormous margin, the current official WRS being 91.4 mm. The specimen comes from a population well below the intertidal level, from the famous locality of Apollo Bay, where it was collected via a lobster trap, during the ‘old days’ of availability. Beyond hypermature: massively thickened shell walls; incredibly solid and heavy. Remarkably good condition for such advanced age and size. My precision calipers give 115.99-116.1 mm upon multiple measurements, but the increase over the current official WRS is so substantial as to render the preeminence of the current specimen unchallenged, and almost certainly unrivalled in perpetuity. To APPROPRIATELY apply a much overused phrase, this represents a true ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ for a Muricidae specialist, or dedicated collector of giant-sized / WRS shells. Data: Henty Reef, Apollo Bay, Barwon Region, Victoria, Australia; upon rock reef substrate; 10-20 m; lobster pot; 1977. Size: 116.1 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
