| Item | # 0003883440 | | Family | ECHINOIDEA | | Name | Arbacia spatuligera - Very Rare-Hard to Obtain , (Valenciennes, 1846) |
| Size | 34 mm |
| Locality | Northern Chile |
| Note | One very nice specimen, the smallest that I have obtained (34 mm), of the very rare and hard to get(I usually obtain about 4-7 specimens per year) subtidal urchin Arbacia spatuligera. This species is naturally rare, and they live from 20 m up to about 200 m in northern Chile, however, most of them are obtained from about 35 to 70 m depth, in rocky outcrops. Apparently, there are two varieties for this species, and this one is from the rarer northern variety with coarser sculpture. This specimen was collected alive in prospective fisheries on northern Chile at 30-35 fathoms, and it is in very good condition for the species, having no damages or erosion to the shell. This is the test, denuded, of a small-sized specimen; it was lightly cleaned with hand soap, but still can be cleaned further with some patience. This specimen retain its soft parts dry inside the shell and also its aristotle's lamp intact. These specimens are of a darker hue of brown (with some purplish when fresh) that other specimens which I have obtained which are paler. I only use soft brushes and hand soap to not alter the colors or texture of the shell. An interesting and very difficult-to-get Natural History Item from the southeastern Pacific. |
