| Item | # 0003952842 | | Family | Volutidae | | Name | Iredalina mirabilis aurantia - RARE QUALITY , Powell, 1954 |
| Size | 91.3 mm |
| Locality | New Zealand |
| Note | An outstanding large specimen of this beautiful form, collected over half a century ago, during the ‘old days’ of deep-water New Zealandic trawling. Rare quality. PERFECT, fully mature, thickened and glossed apertural lip. Rich orange apertural interior, whence comes the subspecies name. Impeccably curated, appearing as fresh as if collected this year. Not freshly collected for decades, and now obtainable only from choice old collections. Note: Powell named aurantia as a full species, based primarily upon its more ovate form than that of typical slender, elongate examples, but he also noted the diagnostic feature of its rich apertural colour, ‘It is a very similar colour to that of the well known Fijian orange cowry, Cypraea aurantium, Linn.’. Definitely for the advanced Volutidae specialist seeking a top-level example of this form. Data: Off Timaru, Canterbury Region, South Island, New Zealand; upon sand/mud/detritus substrate; 180-220 m; dredged; 1974. Size: 91.3 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
