| Name | Cypraea teulerei - ULTRA-DARK; MANTLE LINE , Cazenavette, 1846 |
| Size | 42.9 mm |
| Locality | Oman |
| Note | This famous specimen was collected upon the very FIRST expedition during which the species was rediscovered upon the Omani mainland, now over a decade ago. At that time I acquired the shell for 460 EUR – a high premium for the time – and, although much subsequent collecting has reduced the price of fresh examples, outstanding specimens still command a premium. Ultra-rich, fully stable colour, as fresh as the day it was collected. Spectacular dorsal pattern: honey-golden ‘lightning strike’ mantle line, flanked by rich chestnut. Spectacular margins, exhibiting multitudinous purplish brown maculae. Hypermature: extremely solid and heavy. A teulerei for the connoisseur, with an engaging history. Data: Ash-Sharqiyyah South Governorate, Sultanate of Oman; upon grey sand/mud substrate, amongst seagrass and sponges, at low tide; December 2012. Size: 42.9 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne. |
