| Note | A superb very large specimen of the now legendary SHIPWRECK form, collected by renowned Californian shell diver Paul Kanner from the wreck of the ‘Star of Scotland’. Exquisite ultra-dark rust-influenced colour, and associated ultra-thick, resplendent gloss. Supremely well-formed dorsal encircling annulus. Markedly INFLATED OVATE form – the form sought by the connoisseur. The specimen was formerly in the Kanner private collection, and the original Kanner label accompanies the specimen, with a hand-written Kanner note to reverse. Very difficult to obtain like this now. HISTORICAL NOTE: ‘The Star of Scotland’, built in 1917, was originally a British Royal Navy warship, named H.M.S. Mistletoe. It subsequently underwent numerous name changes, from Chiapas; to La Playa de Ensenada; to the City of Panama; to the Star of Hollywood; to Texas, before assuming her final name, with operations ranging from fruit transport; to gambling; to cruises, all between the USA and Mexico, before finally being sunk during a storm upon 23 January 1942. Data: Off Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California, USA; upon iron substrate, amongst sponges, corals, cnidarians (Corynactis sp.), and algae; 20-22 m; dived; 2016. Size: 51.2 mm.
