Zonaria petitiana (Crosse, 1872) X Zonaria zonaria (Gmelin, 1791) Senegal, Pointe des Almadies, by local fishermen. IV.2009. 22.4 mm. An extremely rare hybrid between these two closely related species, petitiana and zonaria. It has in fact shell features of both species! This is one of few reports of hybridization between these two species. The same hybrid has been reported by Lorenz, 2018 in his Cowries book, page 334, where you can see two other specimens. The upper specimen perfectly fits with the specimen offered here. Really an amazing specimen fitting the most serious cowries collections.
