This specimen represents a different Queensland DEEP-WATER variant of this endemic northern Australian species to that offered in the previous auction. Greenish cream dorsal ground, overlaid with mottled maculations of rich caramel. High cream and ivory margins. For the Cypraeidae specialist interested in unusual variants. NOTE: There is a prolific tendency across the internet literature to refer to specimens such as that offered here as ‘vaticina’ Iredale, 1931. Gratiadusta vaticina, as outlined by Iredale, is a very large, very solid, greatly inflated shell. I have not examined the holotype in person, but I have seen just a few specimens of a rare, very broad and inflated deep-water Queensland variety which answer to Iredale’s description and figures. These are substantially different to more typically encountered deep-water Queensland examples. For this reason, I refer to the current specimen as a ‘deep-water form’ of subviridis – definitely the safest and most sensible approach at this juncture. Real effort must be made to examine the type specimens of both vaticina and anceyi (Vayssière, 1905), in order to arrive at an educated, and possibly definitive conclusion as to the correct taxonomic status of these two forms.
