Arbacia spatuligera Very rare
53 mm     northern Chile     160,00 €
Item# 0004124613
FamilyECHINOIDEA
NameArbacia spatuligera - Very rare , (Valenciennes, 1846)
Size53 mm
Localitynorthern Chile
NoteOne very nice specimen, one of the largest that I have obtained (test of 53 mm in diameter), and the best, of the very rare and hard to obtain subtidal urchin Arbacia spatuligera. I usually obtain only about 4-7 specimens per year. This species is naturally rare, and they live from 20 m up to about 200 m in northern Chile, however, most of them are obtained from about 35 to 70 m depth, in rocky outcrops. This specimen was collected alive in some prospective fisheries on northern Chile, and it is in excellent condition for the species. This is the test, denuded, of a large-sized specimen, and it was lightly cleaned with hand soap, but still can be cleaned further with some patience. The color of these specimens is darker that the others which I have previously obtained, and this specimen in particular has a very nice dark brown-purplish color. I only use soft brushes and hand soap to not alter the colors or texture of the shell. An interesting and very difficult-to-get Natural History Item from the southeastern Pacific. I can send larger images if needed.
