Found primarily off the coast of Western Australia (from Mandurah to Lancelin, including Rottnest Island), these small, richly colored cowries are distinguished by their dark dorsum and are typically discovered by scuba divers inside underwater caves feeding on sponges.Key Characteristics & InformationTaxonomy: First described by F.A. Schilder in 1963, it belongs to the family Cypraeidae and the subfamily Zoilinae.Size: They are among the smallest of the Zoila venusta complex, generally measuring between 41 to 65 mm in length.Coloration: Treasured by collectors for its dark, "black veil" or deep golden hues. The base often exhibits a rich contrast against the dorsal pattern.Habitat & Behavior: These marine gastropods are strictly nocturnal and benthic. Divers typically encounter them in depths ranging from 10- 30 metres sheltering in overhangs or caves where they forage on specific yellow-green sponges.Rarity & AvailabilityBecause they inhabit challenging underwater environments and are limited to a narrow geographic range off the Western Australian coast, perfectly preserved "gem" specimens are difficult to source.
