This UNIQUE specimen was obtained during the famous early 1990s dredgings of Manila Bay, from a thick muddy sand/detritus substrate, in deep-water, whence several highly interesting pale coloured specimens were obtained. These specimens were embedded in the the substrate, and it was only the particularly penetrating nature of the dredging process which revealed them after their long period hidden from the eyes of man. Amongst the species thus found, the current specimen was the standout. The specimen was offered at the time as a ‘WHITE’ gloriamaris, and subsequent assessment by a number of authoritative sources would seem to confirm its standing as a SUBFOSSIL – a diagnosis borne out by the sediment deep within the shell; the atypically thickened shell walls, (possibly from calcification); and the obvious far greater WEIGHT and SOLIDITY of the specimen in comparison with typical recent examples. Indeed, the specimen may prove to be a relict precursor to the recent gloriamaris, or perhaps even a related extinct species, as the overall morphology, especially that of the whorl periphery, is rather different to recent examples. (I also offer an exceptional recent specimen of the same size for direct comparison in this sale.) I leave it to a highly advanced Conidae specialist to determine its ultimate taxonomic standing. Whatever its actual nature, it remains a ‘talking point’ piece of conchology, with a striking presence. Data: Manila Bay, off North Point, Corregidor, Luzon, Philippines; upon sand/mud/detritus substrate; 60-80 m; dredged; 1992. Size: 110.4 mm. Grading: F++ (subfossil). Provenance: JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
