I believe that there are two distinct rosselli lineages present on the Hartog Shelf. It is my opinion that satiata is a rosselli lineage that was present on the Hartog Shelf prior to and during the last ice age and that a second lineage migrated north across the Hartog Shelf from the Rottnest Shelf during the current inter-glacial period. This is because over the past 20 years we have observed two distinct forms of rosselli. The first being satiata which prior to 2000 were abundant in the Quobba point area but are now thought to be extinct in this area. They are light weight narrow domed shells that commonly have gold aperture flashes and occasionally produce the gold form edingeri. They are generally very dark shells with small and often with no dorsal window producing a lot of completely black specimens. The second form are flat very heavy flared calloused shells with prominent dorsal windows. We have yet to see any indication of rufinism in this form. They are present from the Abrolhos Island through to the Red Bluff area. Flamingo and the Bernier Island shells are exceptionally heavy flared examples of this lineage. I believe rosselli from the Rottnest Shelf crossed the drowned Abrolhos land bridge approximately 5,000 to 12,000 years ago and colonized the Hartog Shelf. Over the years we have collected the occasional sub fossil rosselli in many locations on the Hartog Shelf that appear to be satiata and very different to live rosselli we find in the same area. One consistent feature they exhibit is that they have is excess nacre wear from abrasion. This is something we do not see in dead specimens of Zoila current living in the same area. I believe this is due to shallow water turbulence during the last ice age when sea levels were up to 143 metres lower than present and that they are exhumed fossils. This big ugly brute is a crabbed shell collected from a sponge garden in 78 metres of water west of Dorre Island off Shark Bay during June 2026. It has substantial nacre blistering on its base and margins in addition to green algae in its dorsal nacre. We can thank global warming and higher water temperatures for the damage. Unfortunately are seeing this more frequently in rosselli from the northern portion of their geographic range. We have recently found a surviving population of satiata in 170 metres of water on the edge of the continental shelf west of Cape Cuvier. To date we have only found a limited number but perhaps we may run into gold edingeri in the future.
