| Note | An OUTSTANDING specimen of the ULTRA-RARE HEARD ISLAND form of this exceedingly rare, extreme deep-water, Southern Ocean, cold water species. One of only a few known Heard Island specimens, and the ONLY specimen of the JES Collection. The majority of the known specimens were collected from the nearby Kerguelen Islands, (French Southern and Antarctic Lands), with extremely few specimens having been obtained from Heard Island, (Australian External Territory). The Heard Island form appears to be more slender and elegant of form. At the time of publication of ‘The Living Volutes’, in 1970, only 2 dead-collected specimens were known. Since then, a few deep-water research vessels have obtained a handful of specimens, but none have been collected for many years, and are unlikely to ever be collected again. One of Dance’s ‘50 Rare Shells’, the species remains extremely rare upon account of the inaccessibility of the locality, and depth at which the species lives. In this exceptional specimen we are able to witness the highly glossy LIVE-COLLECTED shell. Typical minor disruptions and substrate inclusions, invariably associated with this extreme deep-water, detritus-laden habitat, delicate-shelled species. Apertural lip smoothed, as usual. The locality is now protected as a World Heritage Area, and no fresh specimens will be available in future. A unique opportunity for a highly advanced Volutidae specialist to set their own price for this consummate rarity.
