NoteSPECIAL SALE – MASTERPIECES OF THE JES COLLECTION: One of the FINEST known specimens of the TRUE microsphaerica, as intended by Raybaudi. Virtually EVERY shell offered as microsphaerica is, in fact, merely a small incarnation of the nominate subspecies. The reason for this is that the real microsphaerica is RARE, with this form being absent from virtually every cowrie collection in the world, including many of the most advanced. Having handled several of the known specimens at the time, Raybaudi correctly perceived the distinct nature of this form, and separated it with a form name. True microsphaerica exhibit: 1) EXTREMELY small size at maturity; 2) a decidedly inflated, globose morphology; 3) a distinctly RHOMBOIDAL outline in dorsal perspective; and 4) a markedly fine-walled shell – all of these characteristics producing shells reminiscent of several South African species, (cruickshanki; connelli; iutsui). Hypermature for this fine-shelled species, with pronounced dorsal ridging and malleation. In addition to the desirability of the specimen upon account of its quality and rarity, it possesses the value-added aspect of having been collected by, and retained in the private collection of legendary shell diver PETER CLARKSON, author of the seminal ‘Australia’s Spectacular Cowries’, and the original hand-written Clarkson label accompanies the specimen. An exceedingly rare opportunity for a highly advanced Cypraeidae specialist to add the REAL microsphaerica to their collection. Data: 7.5 km South-West of Green Head, Mid-West region, Western Australia, Australia; upon limestone reef substrate, at reef edge, in crevice, amongst sponges and ascidians; 30 m; dived; 14 Jine 2006. Size: 25.6 mm. Grading: Gem. Provenance: 1) Peter Clarkson, Port Lincoln; 2) JES Collection; London / Melbourne.
