NoteSPECIAL SALE – MASTERPIECES OF THE JES COLLECTION: This EXCEPTIONAL specimen is one of the few known LIVE-COLLECTED examples. The JES Collection contained TWO live-collected specimens, the previous example having been sold in the November 2022 shellauction for €1,125. Several factors contribute to the consummate rarity of this diminutive species in a live-collected state: 1) geographically restricted range – limited to the tiny atolls of the Society Islands; 2) depth of habitat – 70-75 m, a treacherous depth to which few divers are prepared to descend; 3) nature of habitat – camouflaged amongst reef substrate; 4) size of species, rendering discovery all the more difficult. The specimen was collected by famed deep-diver Jean-Pierre Le Forte, at the incredible depth of 75 m, and the original Le Forte label accompanies the specimen, giving his selling price of €2,200. The specimen was placed into the renowned Dr. Peter Stimpson collection in the U.S.A., until that collection was largely acquired by the well-known dealers the Coltro brothers (Femorale). Full live-collected gloss, and brilliant pink terminals. No longer freshly collected, and will probably never be so again. A rare opportunity for a highly advanced Cypraeidae specialist to acquire one of the few known live-collected specimens of this consummate rarity. Data: Off Papenoo, Tahiti, Windward Group, Society Islands; upon coral reef substrate, under coral slab, amongst sponges and corals; 75 m; dived; 1989. Size: 10.1 mm. Grading: Gem.
