Note

EXTREMELY rare species, one of the most difficult to acquire Australian urchin species and of genus Microcyphus. Comes from a very rare and unusual locality of metro Perth waters in central Western Australia, with typical specimens come from Southeastern Australia such as South Australia, Tasmania, and Victoria. Identifies as M. annulatus, however this may in fact be a new species yet to be described. A recently beach-collected specimen I found after some recent strong swells, this is only the second time I have had any luck finding this species in 10+ years of living in Perth, and only a handful of specimens known from this locality. They only wash up on the beach after severe winter storms, however the area where they can be collected is only accessible during low tide and calm weather, thus very specific conditions are required to be able to collect these shells. Unfortunately I reached this specimen a little too late, having clearly been on the beach for a tad longer than whats optimal for preserving its condition. The apical disc and periproctal plates on this specimen have both been worn away, and there is a very small pin hole on the lower side of the shell near the aperture. Even so, this is still an extremely rare urchin species from a very rare locality, and I thought someone might appreciate it in their collection ~ F+/++.
